Paintings by William Bernheim, Holocaust Survivor
"Deportation" by William Bernheim reminds be of the events in the first chapter of Night because forcing anyone, but especially elderly people to pack up their whole lives into one suitcase, and having them move to an unknown place is just the beginning of the atrocities that occurred in the Holocaust.
"Save Yourself" (William Bernheim) is a piece of artwork that brings the moment that Elie and his mother were separated to mind. Wiesel writes about it using language that is simple, and this painting is done in much the same way. It visualizes what people went through during the transport process, and yet, it is an extremely traumatizing moment for the mother and son.
"The Last Walk" (William Bernheim) is a painting that reminds me of the exhibit of Auschwitz at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. The people who got off of the trains had no idea what was waiting for them. They simply lined up, gave up their bags, and waited for the worst.
William Bernheim's "The Second Generation" is representative of Elie's experience in chapter one as a boy. He was committed to his faith, and learning as much as he could about it. The boy in the painting is about the same age as Elie in the beginning of the book.
Klezmer Music - Yiddish Party Music
One of the great experiences I had last summer was the opportunity to spend time learning about Jewish Culture. During this time we got to listen to Rabbi Greg Wall (click on his name to learn more about him) teach us about Klezmer music. Below you will see some video footage of the Rabbi's presentation to me and 24 other teachers and professors at The Olga Lengyel Institute in New York City in June 2019. Next you will see a video of a Klezmer musician from Puebla, Mexico (I thought this was a cool connection for me personally), and finally a video of a playlist of Klezmer music.
